Program Descriptions

Understanding the WebPAC Customization Framework

Robert E. Duncan, Systems Librarian, Lafayette College

Program description: Successful WebPAC customizers are successful because they understand Innovative's customization framework and the fundamental skills required to take advantage of that framework. This program will help attendees develop a solid understanding of the opportunities for customizing the WebPAC. The first half will concentrate on the different pieces of the framework and understanding which piece does what; the remainder will be devoted to understanding the webpub.def file, that piece of the framework that dictates what cataloging data displays to users. Intended for beginners through intermediate users; familiarity with HTML code helpful, but not required.

IUG Enhancement Process
Beth Young, Access Services Librarian, Christopher Newport University

Program description: Ever wish Millennium would do something it doesn't, or have an idea for an improvement? Is the IUG Enhancements process a total mystery to you? A 2010 Functional Expert on the Enhancements Team will provide an overview how ideas are submitted, how they make it to the ballot, how the voting works, and what's presented to Innovative. Also, get a preview of the new Enhancements interface.

Location Codes and More!

Susan Cheney, ILS Administrator/Catalog Librarian, Saint Joseph's University

Program description: Location codes play a critical role in locating material in the library. However, they do much more in the system. We will be looking at two different structures: hierarchical and list formats. How you structure your codes can be extremely beneficial in gathering data on your collection. We will examine the advantages and disadvantages of both. We will also look at call number prefixes as an aid for shelving.

Circulation and the Truth About Customer Service –New and Improved
Dorothy Hargett, Access Services Supervisor, Regent University

Program description: Learn ways to teach staff the intrinsic value of providing patrons with excellent customer service!

Inventory on the cheap!

Patricia Burke, Catalog Librarian/System Administrator, Virginia Theological Seminary

Program description: Use existing system options (text-based Innopac and Millennium) with free III Offline Circulation software and MSExcel to inventory your collections. We hadn't performed an inventory in more than 12 years. We inventoried 135,000 items in a multitude of collections with only 2 people (myself and a part-time assistant). It took 9 months, we were under no time constraints, and we resolved many missing items and other kinds of problems in the process.
